A recent report on CTV News revealed that dealing with asbestos in public buildings has cost the city of Toronto more than $1 million a year for the last five years – accounting for nearly 200 cases in that time period.
Asbestos was once widely used in residential, institutional and institutional construction for much of the 20th century. Many older buildings (built before the mid-1980’s) feature asbestos or asbestos containing materials in places where you wouldn’t expect to find it, including,
- Floor and ceiling tiles
- Pipe insulation
- Pipe chasing
- Boiler and furnace insulation
- And many other places
As officials pointed out, the situation is a common one in North America, where most urban areas are dealing with the asbestos fallout.
The city’s policy includes,
- Proactively removing or sealing in asbestos during renovations, construction, demolition or other activity that would disturb the integrity of the walls
- Keeping a record of where asbestos is present in any city-owned buildings
- Regular inspections to ensure that intact structures remain intact
Some stakeholders say the risk is minimal and even that the money would be better spent…even as a report published late last year in the Globe and Mail revealed that asbestos is the single largest source of workplace deaths in this country.
Why Take the Risk?
At GS we understand that when it comes to so many public buildings, it may not be feasible to completely remove asbestos from all of them all at once. But it doesn’t make sense to keep asbestos in your home where you live. Older materials do inevitably deteriorate over time and even if asbestos is nearly indestructible the other materials typically mixed with it are not.
Our experienced technicians offer professional, certified asbestos removal and asbestos remediation services to help give you peace of mind.
