Snow Days…and Mould Days?

The kids got a couple of extra days and parents an unexpected childcare headache this week in Southwestern Ontario when a public school was forced to close for two days after mould was found in classrooms.

Testing found a strain of mould called Cladosporium, one of the most common household strains that is also found in grass and soil.

Officials said they’d also found “substances that may promote the growth of mould.” That means organic matter that mould feeds on to grow, which can mean just about anything from traces of soap to oils left by hand prints. Mould also happens to love cellulose based substances like wood, paper and even carpeting.

Watch Those Leaks
The other thing that mould needs to thrive is moisture – and it doesn’t have to be a lot. A pinhole leak in pipes behind the wall – where you never see it, and it lingers – is all it takes for mould to begin to take hold. It can do that within 24 to 48 hours.

Even if you can’t see mould in your home, you may know it’s there by certain signs and symptoms:

  • A telltale, persistent musty odour;
  • Constant eye, nose and throat irritation;
  • Worsening symptoms of asthma, even under treatment;
  • Persistent respiratory systems.
