An Edmonton based contractor is facing multiple charges under Nunavut’s Safety Act for asbestos removal work at Iqaluit’s Qikiqtani General Hospital. The Worker’s Safety and Compensation Commission alleges that the company put its workers at risk during the asbestos abatement procedures.
The job was complicated when the general contractor ran out of money and workers walked off the job. Another contractor has stepped in to finish the renovation work, including asbestos removal.
A Homeowner’s Nightmare
You hire a contractor because you want an expert to do the job. When that contractor follows improper procedures, they’re not only putting their own workers at risk – they’re putting you at risk too.
Asbestos is considered safe as long as it’s intact – but once it’s been damaged or disturbed it can send breathable (friable) fibres into the air. Proper – read ‘safe’ – asbestos removal includes:
- Safety equipment for workers
- Complete containment of the site while the work is underway
- Safe removal in sealed containers to an approved facility
- Clean up of the area afterwards so that no asbestos or asbestos containing dust remains
Above all, it means trained, experienced workers – just like our GreenStream technicians.
Both the EPA and the Canadian Lung Association, among others, recommend professional asbestos removal and remediation services. It’s far too big of a risk to take on your own. In addition, you have no legal remedy if you should suffer from asbestos exposure; you could be putting you and your loved ones at risk.
What you can do if you suspect there is asbestos or asbestos containing material in your home – after you call a licensed professional:
- Leave it alone – seal it off as best you can
- Stay away from the area
- Be especially vigilant where children or the elderly are concerned
Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act specify three types or levels of asbestos abatement and our technicians are experienced in all three, providing you expert service from small to large jobs.
