Alexander Henry Marine Museum ship cured of asbestos

Thanks to asbestos remediation, one of Kingston’s main tourist attractions is ready to make a comeback.

If you’ve ever visited Kingston, you probably know that it’s one of Canada’s most underrated tourist destinations, with Fort Henry, countless haunted buildings, and a pretty view of Lake Ontario.

But one of the city’s top attractions, the Marine Museum ship Alexander Henry, was discovered to be infested with asbestos in 2010. As you’ll recall from the GreenStream blog, even a small amount of exposure to the carcinogenic fibre can be enough permanently damage your ability to fight malignant cells.

Naturally, the ship was closed down. Thankfully, though, the ship is making a comeback. As of the beginning of August, the ship has been declared safe for entry.

“The Ministry of Labour has determined that the ship is safe to enter, that previously identified areas of asbestos have been remediated, and there are no other areas of additional asbestos concerns at this time,” said Doug Cowie, the museum manager.

Great news. And Kudos to the Ministry of Labour for holding out so long before declaring the ship safe for access again. One of the biggest problems with asbestos removal today: the jobs aren’t done thoroughly enough and fibres are left behind.

By all accounts, the Alexander Henry Marine Museum is safe to visit now. Give it a visit and thank Ontario asbestos removal that you can!
