The recent discovery of asbestos in the Willowdale Child Care and Learning Centre in Guelph led to the evacuation of children and employees.
A staff member of the daycare discovered insulation at the bottom of the doorframe and subsequent testing proved the existence of asbestos in the vermiculite type insulation. Alternative accommodations have been found and the local medical officer of health has ordered air quality testing to be sure of the risks.
What is Vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a natural mineral that expands when it’s heated, is lightweight and fire resistant. Those properties have led to its widespread use for a variety of construction, mechanical and industrial applications for over a century, including loose fill insulation that’s often found in attics. By itself, it does not present a health hazard, however, most of the vermiculite used for insulation in North America between 1919 and 1990 came from a mine in Montana that also contained asbestos deposits which contaminated the vermiculite.
Vermiculite insulation is lightweight and looks something like small sized foam chips that are grey or brownish in colour.
