Hospital Renovations Include Asbestos Remediation

The Georgetown Hospital west of Toronto is undergoing a significant renovation project. It’s designed to bring the Hospital’s facilities into the future with up to date equipment but ironically, the project involves dealing with an old issue – asbestos.

The large construction project involves outfitting a new emergency department and diagnostic imaging department, including a 17,000 square foot addition. The $9 million project naturally involves a great deal of high tech equipment for both of those departments and the addition will be a steel construction clad in masonry and linked to the existing hospital building.

Healthcare construction is a unique field, especially in our post-SARS world, where there are strict requirements for infection prevention in the construction methods themselves. Renovations to the old portions of the hospital include gutting the interior for retrofits to accommodate new equipment and something you might not expect – asbestos remediation.

As any public or private building constructed before the 1970’s, asbestos remains a lingering issue. Asbestos management is regulated in public buildings and the hospital administration was well aware of where the material was located as well as maintaining a schedule of inspections to check that it’s still intact.

Be Aware
When it comes to the deadly results of asbestos exposure, including mesothelioma and other lung cancers, the results are already in. No amount of exposure is considered safe.

Asbestos in a mixture is considered safe as long as that mixture is intact. The danger comes when it deteriorates and crumbles and becomes airborne – or friable.

  • Asbestos remediation is possible in many cases if removal is deemed to be too disruptive.
  • You should be aware of where asbestos is located in your home and keep an eye on it regularly for damage or deterioration.
  • Just as it was for the hospital, it will be crucial information when you do any renovations.
