Children’s toy and product manufacturer Fisher-Price is recalling an infant recliner seat that it says can expose babies to mould.
The recall affects nearly 800,000 items and involves a reclining seat with a removable seat cushion. The concern is that mould growth is likely to occur between the cushion and the plastic frame, particularly if it’s not cleaned often or if moisture lingers in that area. It’s designed for babies to sit or sleep in it and lying in the recliner for an extended period of time would potentially expose them to mould.
The recall draws attention to a couple of important points when it comes to managing mildew and mould in your own home:
- Mould exposure can affect anyone but it’s of particular concern with young children (also the elderly and smokers)
- Mould often grows in those overlooked nooks and crannies where moisture lingers
Mould can grow and take hold within 24-48 hours if the conditions are right, and that includes anywhere that there is moisture. Some areas of concern that you might not usually consider include:
- Dripping pipes underneath a sink
- Excessive or persistent window condensation, even on harder surfaces like tile or vinyl windows. You’ll often find moisture and mould build up between double pane windows.
- In attics and basements, where it can affect stored items
You may never know it’s there!
Once mould spores have entered the air and gotten into your HVAC system, they can travel throughout your home. But, while you may not see it, you will still feel the consequences of mould exposure. The symptoms are often flu-like and include:
- Respiratory discomfort including wheezing and coughing
- Eye, nose and throat irritation
- Persistent phlegm build up
- Allergic reactions
If your symptoms are persistent and can’t be explained otherwise, then you owe it to yourself and your family to get help. That’s where we come in.
