Wine vs. Mould

A Québec wine collector is suing the Société des Alcools du Québec (SAQ) for close to $1 million after his collection of vintage wines – consisting of over 3,000 bottles – was allegedly damaged by conditions in the SAQ owned facility where he was storing them.

In early 2010, Robert Chiraz went to the storage facility to check his collection and was shocked at the conditions he found, including insulation that had fallen from the ceiling and evidence of moisture everywhere. There were wet or damp surfaces on the racks, cases and even the wine bottles themselves.

On a subsequent visit, he found mould growing in many parts of the cellar – not surprisingly. An analysis performed at a later date found high quantities of mould-inducing fungi, including Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Hyphes in his storage cellar as well as in the surrounding units.

His entire collection, including top vintages and large quantities of valuable wines, was declared to be unsellable by a top Toronto wine auctioneer and appraiser.
