Windsor Grace Hospital Demolition Begins With Asbestos Removal

A long simmering issue will be resolved in Southwestern Ontario with a recent announcement that the provincial government will kick in $3 million to assist in the clean-up of the former Grace Hospital site in Windsor. More money – $4 million – is waiting on final approval and both sums come in addition to the $2 million that was originally committed to the project.

The Grace Hospital closed in 2004 and redevelopment plans fizzled into nothing. Since then the site has been left to deteriorate. It’s been an eyesore and a thorn in the side of area residents who are rightly concerned with the environmental impacts of the structure’s ongoing deterioration. It’s been plagued by vandals and a vermin infestation.

Asbestos
Naturally, asbestos was one of the major considerations voiced by neighbours to the site. Asbestos becomes dangerous to human health as it deteriorates and produces airborne fibres which can be inhaled. That’s how it causes mesothelioma and other serious lung diseases.

In fact, clean-up of the site is beginning with asbestos removal. Even in cases like this where the site will be demolished, it’s important to remove the asbestos separately. It must be contained and then disposed of separately – that’s the only way to ensure the health and safety of everyone concerned.

Renovations
When it comes to asbestos, yesterday’s ‘miracle’ material has become today’s environmental hazard. If your home was built before 1970, you should assume that it contains asbestos in some form and it may show up in a wide range of areas and materials.
