Toronto Seniors Targeted by Mould & Construction Scam

A Toronto senior is one of nearly a hundred to be allegedly bilked out of hard earned life savings by an unscrupulous home renovations scam. The province has laid charges against Toronto builder Jack Singer and his companies in what they allege is a scam that has targeted up to 90 other seniors.

Working with a team of others, the alleged scam involved gaining the confidence of seniors, who were brought up in a time when politeness and courtesy drew respect. They understood how to appeal to them. Then Singer would arrive for an “inspection” and subsequent dire reports of major issues that need to be handled immediately – including claims of toxic mould.

Many seniors were indeed brought up in a more trusting era and – as the case illustrates – can become targets for a sophisticated scam. You may not see yourself in that category or think of yourself as being too trusting but the only way to protect yourself from fraud is to be sure you’re using a reputable contractor.

Hot Tip:

• Beware of ‘free’ or deeply discounted mould inspections or testing from the same company that will then offer you remediation services.

That’s really your tip-off. If they walk through the place and declare it to be mould infested for free or a “discounted” rate, then by the by offer mould remediation or removal services for what they say is a significant issue – you need a second opinion at the very least.
