With freak storms and flash flooding becoming the norm, a University of Toronto professor’s warning about mould infestation applies anywhere across Southern Ontario.
Professor Jeffrey Siegel studies indoor air quality and he’s urging residents to take action quickly after a flood to reduce the likelihood of residual effects like mould. His most urgent recommendation has to do with getting rid of moisture-damaged materials, including and especially:
- wet carpeting and rugs
- water damaged flooring
- damp drywall
- papers and cardboard
Time is of the essence – even if you remove the material after only a few days, mould spores may have already begun to grow. The fact is they can take hold wherever there’s continuous moisture for only 48 hours.
Professor Siegel also cites Health Canada’s recommendations to:
- control humidity
- repair water damage thoroughly
- clean any flooded areas thoroughly
Remember that you may even be able to clean mould off the surface of a material, but it can have longer roots that linger underneath.
Flooding or Persistent Leaks
You don’t need to experience flooding to see it or smell the telltale musty odour that indicates the presence of mould. Your leaky basement or attic could be making your family sick; if you’ve been experiencing unexplained respiratory issues, a persistent dry cough or worsening allergies, you should definitely be on the lookout for mould. Mould spores can get from a basement into your HVAC system and circulate throughout your home.
