An Eastern Ontario employer was recently fined $25,000 for failing to train and properly equip an employee for asbestos removal and abatement.
Late last year, a Toronto man was redeveloping various properties in Kingston. One of them was clad in asbestos-containing tiles, with more of the tiles stored inside the building. Even after he’d obtained the permit and was advised of all his responsibilities with respect to asbestos removal and disposal, he failed to properly inform or outfit the worker (who lived on-site) for the job.
We believe that kind of fine and regulatory vigilance is essential when it comes to working with asbestos in any capacity. That type of irresponsible behaviour doesn’t just endanger the worker directly involved, it endangers the neighbours, future residents and any others who may come into contact with improperly stored or contained asbestos fibres.
Remodeling, Renovations & Demolitions
The rules are clear – in the case of a demolition in the province of Ontario, you are required to ascertain the presence of hazardous substances – including asbestos – before you begin.
- You may not be planning to demolish your home, but what about renovations?
Even minor renovations and remodeling can disturb asbestos and create the inhalable fibres that are a proven danger to human health. If your home was built before the mid-1980’s, asbestos may be present in a wide variety of areas, in many cases mixed with other materials like concrete or vinyl. It may appear in areas where you least expect it like ceiling and floor tiles or as insulation.
Asbestos Requires Professional Expertise
Working with asbestos is no joke – and not for amateur do-it-yourselfers. Asbestos has been in the news a lot lately and there are a lot of questionable operators out there offering asbestos removal services. You may only be dealing with a fly-by-night agent who subcontracts the job out to unknown parties.
