Museum Renovations Halted When Asbestos is Discovered

Roof renovations at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa have ground to a halt after asbestos was discovered in the roofing materials.

On the very first day of planned renovations, workers noticed that the material they were removing from the roof didn’t look entirely like concrete. Their suspicions proved correct when testing confirmed a 1% concentration of asbestos in the concrete mixture.

The renovation project is now on hold while a new plan of action is put into place. In the interim, the museum corporation is conducting regular air quality testing to be sure that visitors and employees aren’t exposed to any airborne asbestos.

Asbestos Containing Materials – or ACM
The Canada Science and Technology Museum is housed in a building that’s almost a half a century old, so it’s no surprize that asbestos would have been found. As was once a common practice, asbestos was mixed with another material – in this case concrete – which was then formed into the roofing tiles. You’ll find asbestos containing materials in a wide range of locations in a building.

  • Mixed with vinyl – in ceiling or floor tiles
  • Mixed with caulking – around windows and doors (exterior and interior)
  • Mixed with paint – on your walls as textured paint
  • Mixed with plaster – in those textured “popcorn” ceilings

You can’t tell what asbestos looks like with the naked eye when there are so many places it can show up.
