Couple’s Mouldy DIY Nightmare Has a Happy Ending

After a mouldy home sent them to live in a trailer with three small children, a Southwestern Ontario family’s year-long housing nightmare recently had a Cinderella finish thanks to a celebrity home renovations expert and a caring community.

In the fall of 2012, a young couple with three boys from Windsor went through the kind of nightmare every house buyer fears. They bought a modest back-split relying on the endorsements of their realtor along with his handpicked home inspector.

By April 2013, all of the members of the family had repeatedly fallen sick and the wife had been hospitalized four times for respiratory illnesses. Riddled with mould and other issues, their home was declared uninhabitable and even Children’s Aid was making inquiries out of concern for the boy’s welfare.

The home suffered from a variety of problems caused by shoddy DIY electrical and plumbing work that had resulted in massive mould issues. The workers who ended up renovating the home said the problems were obvious and visible.

After their insurers refused to pitch in, HGTV home reno star Bryan Baeumler and the Baeumler Family Foundation along with companies in the area stepped in to help when the family went public with their plight.

Beware of DIY
The province is currently working towards a regulatory and licensing regime for Ontario home inspectors, which should at least begin to address the issue of home buying, but it’s a fact that many homeowners are tempted to make their own often inadequate housing repairs. Times are tough for many and it can seem like a good way to save money.

But – you really are leaving yourself open to wreaking the same kind of damage. All it takes for mould to begin to take hold is a pinhole leak in piping or a plumbing joint and about 48 hours.
