Family Forced to Vacate Home After Botched Asbestos Removal

A Winnipeg family was driven by their home after a horribly botched asbestos removal job. After their complaints, the Chief Occupational Medical Officer of the province went so far as to issue an order forcing the company to decontaminate the house

The family had hired a company to do asbestos remediation in preparation for the removal of an old boiler. They filed a complaint against the company with the provincial Workplace Safety and Health Commission after a series of troubling situations arose.

• Workers did not wear any safety gear and simply carried asbestos openly throughout the home
• Open bags of asbestos in the home
• An air filtration system that was not properly set up

The WSH first issued a stop-work order that includes several different violations:

• releasing asbestos particles into the air
• failing to give notice of an asbestos removal project
• failing to train and equip employees handling asbestos

The agency also intends on inspecting the work after it is done. Sadly, the fines typically amount to $2,500 or less for this type of offense. We think it should be more.
