Wood, Water & Mould in the Springtime

Humidity levels are typically high this time of year. Even though the temperatures aren’t as high as they will be later in the summer, the start of the growing season in spring requires a lot of moisture and while it’s wonderful for your garden and lawn, it can wreak some havoc with your hardwood flooring if the conditions are right – including mould.

Wood Expansion
When there is constant humidity in the air, the wood in your home – including hardwood flooring – can expand.

The type of wood makes a difference; genuine 100% hardwood is more susceptible to absorbing water and the resulting problems. Engineered hardwood consists of a veneer of hardwood over a plywood base which makes it much more resistant to humidity.

  • Movement – a little bit is normal, a lot signals deeper problems
  • Does the space between planks change with the seasons?

Either of these may be signs of too much moisture that is affecting your hardwood flooring.

Mould and Hardwood Floors
Anywhere there is constant moisture for 48 hours or more, mould can grow and develop. It only needs two things: water and organic materials and your wood flooring fits the bill nicely. If humidity is elevated over a period of time, it can create an environment of constant moisture that lingers below the wood. When mould develops underneath your flooring, it can pose a real problem because you may not even notice it until it’s extensive.

The most effective solution? Prevention.

  • Adjust the humidity in your home – this likely involves using a humidifier in the winter and a dehumidifier in the summer to keep moisture levels in the air at levels that won’t allow moisture to linger.

If You Notice the Signs of Mould
Mould is a serious health hazard that can cause a host of symptoms and issues including respiratory issues, worsened asthma and more. Some of the signs of mould include,

  • A persistent musty odour
  • Grey, green or black stains that don’t come out
  • Persistent and unexplained flu-like symptoms such as coughing, eye and nose irritation
