Some parties just don’t learn – although in this case of repeated asbestos violations, we’re not sure if that statement applies more to the company or the governmental bodies involved.
Seattle Environmental of Vancouver was fined a whopping $280K last December for incidents involving asbestos removal that happened between 2013 and 2015. Those fines were recently upheld by the review division of WorkSafe BC. But now, the company’s owner faces a fresh round of charges and fines – all of which, including the original charges, he continues to claim are false. In the meantime, the company continues to take on jobs as usual…
The company is involved in conducting hazardous materials surveys and removing asbestos-containing materials from houses. The infractions are said to be “repeated” and “high risk” – that means the company’s operations are putting employees and possibly others at risk of inhaling asbestos fibres.
It’s Outrageous
We have to agree with the B.C. Insulators Union on this one. The organization called on the provincial government to make asbestos removal and testing subject to mandatory licensing. That way, those who violate the rules can lose their licenses instead of just going on with business as usual.
When an asbestos removal company does sloppy work, it’s dangerous.
- Workers without proper training may not know how to properly contain the asbestos dust;
- Workers without proper equipment are directly exposed to asbestos risk;
- An improperly contained worksite can send asbestos fibres across a whole neighbourhood and even beyond.
