Sarnia’s Centennial Park Asbestos Nightmare

Many cities are taking old industrial properties and now reusing them for new developments, often called brown field remediation. But, what’s under the ground? Often, the rubble and debris includes asbestos.

Sarnia’s Park Problem
Picturesque Centennial Park in Sarnia sits on the St. Clair River, once the site of music festivals, kids and families playing and enjoying the scenery.

About five years ago, a tar-like substance started showing up in large blobs all over an area of the park near the boat ramp. The area was closed off while tests were conducted, and the results showed not just asbestos, but lead and other contaminants.

The park is on the former site of a Sifto salt factory, including salt wells and machinery that used coal fuel. The factory switched names a few times over the years, but was in production for over 60 years. Later on, the site was used for a sawmill. The park was created with industrial fill. It’s not clear where exactly the asbestos and lead contamination came from – perhaps all those sources.

This summer, five years and $12 million later, the whole park is set to re-open.

Asbestos Underground
The situation in Sarnia is an extreme case, but it’s not unusual per se. It doesn’t have to an an industrial site, either.

  • Asbestos contamination can come from a house demolition, or even from debris from a renovation that wasn’t properly disposed of.
  • Asbestos in the ground presents a danger because it can become a dust that is spread on the wind.

Once it’s windborne, friable asbestos can contaminate an unknown area.
