The residents of an Eastern Ontario building complex are concerned about asbestos contamination after a fire at the building.
Last month, a row housing complex in Nepean was virtually gutted by a fire. Naturally, the residents had to be evacuated, but after the fire inspectors were done, any items that were salvaged from the burnt out building were returned to them.
There’s only one problem: possible asbestos contamination.
Asbestos Contamination
Residents raised the alarm after items were returned. Were they contaminated with asbestos? And why was there no information about the situation coming from the landlord?
The concern is warranted. At a meeting with the local fire department, residents described getting back belongings that were covered in insulation fibres, black sludge, ash and more. A fire restoration contractor had been hired for the clean-up, and authorities said the contractor had been advised of the presence of asbestos before the salvage operation began, and had been provided with the asbestos report.
At issue seems to be how the contractor used that information, but the landlord company issued a statement after the meeting that said, in part, “rest assured that the items retrieved and returned to you have been treated by [the contractor] comply with safety standards and are therefore safe to use.”
The Problem
If a building contains asbestos, then the material is considered safe as long as it is intact. However, renovations, or a devastating fire like this one, which destroys the material.
- Deterioration of asbestos containing materials produces dust;
- Asbestos dust can be inhaled into the lungs, which is the cause of many lung diseases, including cancer and deadly mesothelioma.
