Avoiding Asbestos Exposure in Extreme Weather

From earthquakes to hurricanes, the state of the globe has been in the news all year long. The Danger: Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos – or asbestos containing materials (ACM) – may be present in your home from floor to ceiling tiles, window and door sealant, pipe chasing, and much more. While ACM is considered safe while it is intact, flooding and other damage can wear away the other materials, leaving only asbestos fibres to crumble and become friable (or inhalable).

If you have unexpected damage to your home or property, built before the mid-1980s, then you should proceed with caution. Stay as far away as possible from any potentially ACM loaded debris, and call us for help as soon as you can.

• It is difficult to determine the asbestos content of any material just by looking at it – don’t try to eyeball it;
• Try NOT to disturb any debris;
• Try to contain the area until you can get professional help – close up the room and try to block any airways; a plastic tarp may help (but don’t get too close to the debris);
• If the debris is dry, you can try to keep it wet to avoid creating dust;
• If you have been in the same room before containing the debris, take off all clothing at the door and seal it in a plastic bag until you can launder it.
