BCCSA – the British Columbia Construction Safety Alliance – has launched a new online course about working with asbestos that is a first in Canada. The system will be launched later this year.
Asbestos expertise
At GreenStream, we have been in the asbestos removal business for decades, and our experienced technicians are trained, and constantly upgrading their skills and knowledge as new techniques become available.
But, we also recognize that the asbestos removal industry, as long as it remains unregulated, has seen its share of bad apples. The course is designed to educate anyone working in the construction industry. With renovations and reconstruction more and more popular, asbestos exposure is a constant risk.
Asbestos is the leading cause of work-related deaths across Canada. Even though it has been banned from construction for decades, it remains in many older buildings, both public and private homes. In BC alone, more than 15,000 notices of project are filed each year pertaining to working with asbestos
- A string of headlines attest to the fact that asbestos removal scams exist;
- Improper training of employees poses a danger to themselves, and anyone in the vicinity of a work site;
- Proper training consists of knowing how to work with, safely contain, and safely dispose of asbestos and asbestos containing materials.
Mike Sully is the project lead of the BCCSA Asbestos Project. He notes in a media release, “My guess is that there are closer to 125,000 projects each year that involve disturbing asbestos. I believe the majority of those projects are initiated because the people involved lack the knowledge to proceed safely. If you don’t know about asbestos, you won’t file a notice of project. If you’re empowered with better education, this wouldn’t be happening as often.”
What about your home?
If your home or property was built before the mid-1980s, it is likely to contain asbestos in one form or another. The experts at GreenStream can help.
- You may find it anywhere from floor to ceiling tiles, basements to attics.
- You can’t detect asbestos or ACM just by looking.
- Any work that cuts into walls or creates dust can produce friable (inhalable) asbestos.
