City hall in St. Catharines, a small city in the Niagara peninsula just southwest of the GTA, is renovating, and dealing with a common issue in older buildings: asbestos in flooring.
Here’s the situation:
- Glue underneath laminate flooring had deteriorated, causing the tiles to bubble up.
- The floor tiles contain asbestos, which is now crumbling along with the tiles.
Asbestos containing materials (ACM)
At one time, asbestos was found in more than 3,000 products used in residential and industrial construction. But, except in specific cases, asbestos was not used in its pure form. It was most often mixed with other materials to create specific products.
- Mixed with vinyl for floor tiles;
- Mixed with concrete in piping;
- Mixed with plaster in textured ceilings.
Why was asbestos used? On the face of it, it seemed like an ideal material for construction. Asbestos is fire and heat resistant, waterproof, and nearly indestructible. Unfortunately, those same qualities also make it deadly to human health. If the fibres are inhaled, they remain in the lungs, causing inflammation which can eventually lead to many issues, including lung cancers and deadly mesothelioma.
Here’s the trouble with ACM:
- Over the decades, the other material does deteriorate;
- As the ACM crumbles, it produces asbestos dust.
